Wisconsin rivers are beautiful and beloved by kayakers, canoeists and fisherman. That means they are getting more crowded. Follow these safety tips from the Wisconsin Boating Regulations Handbook for a happy day of paddling:

1. Secure all gear to avoid becoming entangled should you capsize.

2. Always pull ashore and examine dangerous areas like rapids before attempting to paddle through.

3. Always wear your life jacket on a river.

4. Carry a throw bag or safety line as well as a first aid kit.

5. Avoid dams, including low head dams. The drop off creates a nydraulic “hole” which can trap people and kayaks.

6. Wear a wet or dry suit in cold water. Don’t underestimate they loss of strength cold water causes.

7. If you find yourself if moving water, keep your feet pointed downstream and never attempt to stand up.
