Skiing with Children

Our kids are grown so the days of carrying most of our ski gear myself, buckling everyone’s boots, helping the lifty get the kids up onto the chair, and holding onto the back of their jackets while they learn (no we didn’t have ski harnesses then) are behind me.

But my back hasn’t forgotten.

And Theresa reminds me of the lessons we learned in packing for a ski trip with young kids.  Things like Kleenex, fruit snacks, granola bars, Tylenol and more Kleenex were always in her pockets. But the most important lesson we learned applies to more than just ski trips:  When the kids are comfortable, everyone else is too.

So we offer that bit of wisdom to any parent who doesn’t already know it.  As you prepare for your ski trip, plan to outfit the kids first.  If your budget doesn’t allow for new things for everyone (and whose does) get your kids into proper base layers, jackets, pants, mittens, socks and helmets first.  Chances are your old jacket still serves it’s purpose and Theresa tells me neon is coming back. (I believe her, check out the snowboard department.)  But if the kids are cold or wet your day just went south.

Lift tickets, lunch in the chalet and gas to get to the ski area are expensive.  Think about getting the most out of that investment when you dress your kids for the day.  Of course it goes without saying that boots and skis that fit are critical for safety and better for learning and fun.

What’s your advice on skiing with young kids?  Heaven help me, I may be out there with grandchildren one day.
